Sincona sale 4, lot 4961

This specimen was lot 4961 in Sincona sale 4 (Zurich, October 2011), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,927 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Firenze Ferdinando III. 1791-1801. Zecchino 1797. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (Italy, Florence, duke Ferdinand III, 1791-1801, zecchino of 1797. Splendidly preserved, nice uncirculated.)"

This ducat or zecchino or fiorino does not seem to be listed in the SCWC. The reverse features John the Baptist. Similar issues for Pietro Leopoldo (1779-89) and Francesco III (1737-43) are listed as rare. In 1807, the grand duchy was annexed to France, to be returned to the Austrians in 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,49 g.

Catalog reference: Mont-127, Fr. 337, KM C38 (unlisted date).
