Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 924
France J124-924r.jpg

The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux 8 L ("half écu with 8 L's") struck in Bourges during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in France in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Droulers[1] prices this date as scarce, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue. This specimen was lot 924 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €380 (about US$474 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1691 Y, Bourges. 1er type. 1e réformation. Droit: B. drapé à droite. Revers: Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Rare. Fines griffes. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver half écu of eight L's of 1691, Bourges mint, first type, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned L's with four lilies in the fields. Rare, fine scratches, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Recorded mintage: unknown but all on "reformed blanks" (older coins)[1].

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 31-32 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin; this specimen 13,35 g.
