This specimen was lot 31610 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $15,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicholas II Rouble 1902-AP MS66 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Head of Nicholas II left. Rev. Crowned double-headed eagle with date and value. Nicely struck, with frosty white luster on the obverse and light golden patina on the reverse. Only a few tiny marks are visible and the overall appearance is stunning for this elusive issue. No examples have been certified finer than this superb example, with a total of only two pieces certified in this grade by NGC and PCGS combined." In 1886, the ruble was reduced to 20 grams after having been fixed at 20.73 grams since 1798. This type was struck 1894-1915.
