This specimen was lot 24578 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 50 Cents, 1896. London Mint. Victoria. NGC AU-58. Quite wholesome and original, this barely handled minor presents some mottling to the toning but otherwise remains free from issue." The type was struck in 1886-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and this date is fairly common. Proofs exist but are not mentioned for this date.
Recorded mintage: 120,000.
Specification: 13.58 g, 0.800 fine silver, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM-13.
