Straits Settlements 1897 50 cents

Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 51327

This specimen was lot 51327 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $528. The catalog description^[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 50 Cents, 1897. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details Gold Shield. Lightly handled throughout, this subtly cleaned minor nevertheless remains a difficult piece in higher grades such as is presented here." The type was struck in 1886-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and this date is fairly scarce. Proofs exist but are not mentioned for this date.

Recorded mintage: 36,000, a scarce date.
