This specimen was lot 51327 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 50 Cents, 1897. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details Gold Shield. Lightly handled throughout, this subtly cleaned minor nevertheless remains a difficult piece in higher grades such as is presented here." The type was struck in 1886-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and this date is fairly scarce. Proofs exist but are not mentioned for this date.

Recorded mintage: 36,000, a scarce date.

Specification: 13.58 g, 0.800 fine silver.
