This specimen was lot 22605 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 20 Mark, 1896-A. Berlin Mint. Ernst Ludwig. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. A fairly RARE date, this piece exhibits some moderate handling and some darker areas, but nevertheless remains a solid representation of the type." This type was struck 1896-1903 at the Berlin mint and is rather scarce in circulated condition. Ernest Louis was the last grand duke of Hesse, abdicating upon the collapse of the German Empire in 1918.

Recorded mintage: 15,000 + 230 proofs.

Specification: 7.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW.
