Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 709
Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg Stacks Jan15-709r.jpg

This specimen was lot 709 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Taler, 1673. NGC AU Details--Tooled. Minor tooling. Commemorating the government transfer to the Principality of Altenburg. Rich iridescent toning. Nice details and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One. One of its permutations, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, survived 1680-1826.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-7459.
