Dominican Republic 1963 25 centavos

This specimen was lot 71378 in Stack's Bowers Collector Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $180. The catalog description^[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 25 Centavos, 1963. London Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield. An attractively toned near-Gem, presenting a russet nature scattered near the peripheries and a good deal of lustrous brilliance. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This date was soon after the end of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. This issue commemorates the recovery of independence from the Spanish in 1863. The regular issue with the Indian princess obverse was struck in silver 1937-61 and in copper-nickel 1967-74.
