This specimen was lot 3596 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 1300 CHF (about US$1,644 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BOLIVIEN Carlos IV. 1788-1808. 8 Escudos 1796. Assayer PP. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Bolivia, Charles IV, 1788-1808, eight escudos of 1796. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1791-1808 and is scarce.
