Tuscany 1830 fiorino

CNG Lissner sale, lot 539

This specimen was lot 539 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,452. The catalog description^[1] noted, "ITALY, Toscana (Granducato). Leopoldo II. 1824-1848. AR Fiorino. Firenze (Florence) mint. Dated 1830. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Gem BU with just a hint of toning. Highest ever graded. A great coin. Rarity 3. Purchased from Frank Lapa." This type is listed for 1826-42. These obscure little Italian states coins don't catalog for much but are very difficult to find. This specimen brought triple the catalog value. The fiorino, originally a gold coin equal to a ducat, was in the nineteenth century one quarter of a francescone, the Tuscan equivalent of a piastra.
