This specimen was lot 3127 in Goldberg sale 87 (Los Angeles, September 2015), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Maundy Penny, 1753/2. George II. Mint state and lustrous. A lovely example. NGC graded MS-62." In the eighteenth century, until the introduction of the Boulton and Watt penny of 1797, this denomination was still struck in silver as it had been since the Middle Ages. Most survivors of the reign of George II come from Maundy sets, as this one does. The overdate is awarded a slight premium.
Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.
Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver.
