This specimen was lot 1283 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,067 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-COBURG-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM Johann Ernst, 1633-1638. Reichstaler 1638, Coburg, auf seinen Tod. Kl. Stiftsloch im Rand, sonst attraktives, fast vorzügliches Exemplar mit feiner Patina. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Ernest, 1633-38, thaler of 1638, Coburg mint, on his death. Pin hole in the edge, very attractive, choice extremely fine example with fine toning.)"
This variety was minted 1638 only. This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
