This specimen was lot 31461 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $5,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States. Saxe-Gotha. Johann Ernst gold Ducat 1637 MS62 NGC, Coburg mint. A two-year type that we haven't encountered since 2014 and never with this date. Semi-prooflike fields shimmer beneath a meticulously rendered Taler-like design with hardly an instance of softness to identify. Amber toning in the targets furthers the appeal of this near-Choice specimen, a true boon for collectors." Saxon ducats as a class are rare and this type of 1637-38 is no exception. The death of the duke in 1638 caused the extinction of this particular principality.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 180, Fr-2945.
