Sincona sale 46, lot 823

This specimen was lot 823 in Sincona sale 46 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 4,500 CHF (about US$5,400 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Osterreich, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. 100 Kronen 1909, Wien. Vorzüglich-FDC. Winzige Kratzer. (empire of Austria-Hungary, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, one hundred kronen of 1909, Vienna mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Minor scratches.)"

This gold coin is among the last issued before Austria's suicidal plunge into World War One. The portrait is of Francis Joseph, emperor of Austria 1848-1916. The Austro-Hungarian empire did not long survive him. Regular 100 coronas were emitted 1909-15, with the 1915 being restruck in large numbers in recent times.

Recorded mintage: 3,203.

Specification: 33.87 g, .900 fine gold, .980 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter, this specimen 33.86 g.
