Jean Elsen sale 112, lot 725
Brabant 1634 demi-ducaton rev JElsen 112-725.jpg

This specimen was lot 725 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 120 ($188 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR demi-ducaton, 1634, Anvers. Premier type. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite, avec une large fraise. Revers: Deux lions tenant une grande couronne au-dessus de l'écu du roi, orné du bijou de la Toison d'or. Petit éclat du flan sur la tranche. Belle patine. Très Beau." (Duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver half ducaton of 1634. Obverse: armored bust to right wearing a ruffed collar; reverse: two lions support crowned arms, Golden Fleece below. Small planchet defect on edge, rim rump, nice toning, Very fine.)

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liege and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1628-37 and at the Brussels mint 1624-37. Half ducatons are shown as much scarcer than the ducatons. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.24 g, .944 fine silver, .493 troy oz ASW, this specimen 16.22 g.
