This specimen was lot 608 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $910.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1785-A. Louis XVI (1774-92). NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines. Light hairlines on obverse, full luster on reverse." A better double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Paris mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 27,014.

Specification: 15.29 g, .917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 877, Dr/2 № 604, Fr-474; KM-592.1; Gad-363; Dupl-1706; Droulers-802; DFW-537.
