"Max Gandolph von Küenburg, 1668-1687. Dukat 1683. GOLD. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, ducat of 1683. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

(From 1675, during the reign of Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, the witchcraft trials also commenced, in which young beggars were accused of witchcraft, tortured and executed. In the year following the anniversary, the Prince Archbishop sent 800 soldiers as well as other war material and funds to relieve the city of Vienna besieged by the Turks.)"

In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
