Künker sale 384, lot 2937

This specimen was lot 2937 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €170 (about US$220 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Max Gandolph von Küenburg, 1668-1687. 1/4 Reichstaler 1672. Kl. Stempelfehler, vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, quarter thaler of 1672. Small die cracks, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1669, 1672, 1675 in round format. No klippe version shows in the SCWC. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1813.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.10 g.

Catalog reference: KM 216, Probszt 1667; Zöttl 2009 (Type 1).
