This specimen was lot 23789 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis Philippe I 1/4 Franc 1831A, Proof 66 NGC, a superb piece with fully reflective surfaces and a mild cameo frost to the bust. Rarely encountered as a Proof." This tiny coin was struck at Paris under the régime of king Louis Philippe (1830-48). It is a rather scarce date of a type struck 1831-45. All quarter francs of this reign are of this type, which is common. It was replaced in 1845 by a twenty-five centimes piece (F.167) and demonetized in 1852.

Recorded mintage: 74,696.

Specification: 1.25 g, .900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 740.1, F.166/1.
