This specimen was lot 571 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €340 (about US$424 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR demi-ducaton, 1634, Bruxelles. Premier type. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite, une grande fraise au col. Revers: Deux lions tenant une grande couronne au-dessus de l'écu du roi, orné du bijou de la Toison d'or. Rare. Graffiti au droit. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV (1621-65), silver half ducaton of 1634, Brussels mint, first type. Obverse: armored bust to right with ruffed collar; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, order of the Golden Fleece below. Rare, graffitti on obverse, nice toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liege and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. Half ducatons, issued from Antwerp and Brussels 1624-37, are much rarer than the ducatons. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
