This specimen was lot 71367 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 640 Reis, 1781. Lisbon Mint. Maria I and Pedro III. PCGS MS-62. By far the better of only two examples at PCGS, this Mint State example possesses tremendous eye appeal. The crisp details are complemented by fully lustrous fields. The surfaces are strikingly toned with speckled gray colors that give the piece added depth and visual interest. An exceptionally handsome example of this type. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Privately purchased from Louis Collins, 1969." This type was struck 1778-86 and this date comes in high crown and low crown varieties. The low crown is shown here.
