Brazil 1784-B 5 reis

This specimen was struck at the Bahia mint for Brazil in 1778-85. The minting of copper five réis began in 1693 and continued sporadically thru the eighteenth century. In 1799, the weight of the copper coinage was reduced 50%. All the copper denominations were affected; the five réis was dropped entirely. In 1809, old issues (including this specimen) were recalled and countermarked with a shield to double their value.
