This specimen was lot 20179 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 5 Reis, 1799. Maria II. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Thick planchet. The only example certified in the NGC census, this Near Gem presents splendid brown surfaces with a great deal of red throughout, as well as charming underlying brilliance. An EXCEEDINGLY RARE type, this cataloger could not locate another example selling in recent memory." This product of the Bahia mint is a very scarce one year type. The last Rio mint five réis was struck in 1777.
