Aureo sale 238, lot 430

This specimen was lot 430 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 300 euro (about US$476 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1769. Potosí. JR. 8 reales. Columnario. 9 curvo. Parte de brillo original. Escasa. MBC+. (eight reales of 1769, Potosí mint, pillar type, curved 9. Lustrous, scarce, choice very fine.)"

The year 1767 marked the initiation of milled coinage at Potosi, the last mint to do so, but cobs continued to be produced until 1773. The SCWC lists "fancy 9" and "round 9" varieties for this date; this is a "round 9." This type was struck 1767-70 and is fairly available in circulated condition. Gilboy[2] lists this date as "scarce" whereas the 1769 is "normal" and the 1770 is "common."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .917 fine silver, .798 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11972, Cal. 969, KM 50.
