Guatemala 1769-G P 8 reales
The first specimen was lot 7800 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1769. One test mark on reverse. EXTREMELY FINE." While Guatemala pillar dollars are scarce compared to the issues of Mexico City or Potosi, they are available for a price. The four and eight reales from this mint are more common than the smaller denominations. The second specimen was lot 75 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 400 euro (about US$634 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"1769. Guatemala. P. 8 reales. Columnario. Escasa. MBC+. (eight reales of 1769, Guatemala mint, pillar type. Scarce, choice very fine.)"
Recorded mintage: unknown.
