This specimen was lot 72548 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. 2-1/2 Cents, 1877. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: broadaxe. William III. NGC MS-66 Brown. KM-108. Presenting deep color, this Gem dazzles with a cobalt nature that is seemingly off the charts. Incredibly alluring and engaging." This type is listed for 1877-90 and is the first of its denomination. At the time of issue, it had a face value of about one United States cent. This type, struck for William III (1849-90) is virtually indistinguishable from those struck for Wilhelmina (KM 108.2). This date is common in circulated condition.
Recorded mintage: 4,000,000.
Specification: 4 g, bronze, 23.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-108.1, Sch-679.
