Netherlands 1877 cent KM-100
This specimen was lot 71774 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Cent, 1877. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: Broadaxe. William III. NGC MS-66 Brown. This lovely superb Gem exhibits boldly struck devices with smooth surfaces and lovely rich chocolate brown patina with hints of original mint red amongst the devices." This type is listed for 1860-64, 1870-77. This type, struck for William III (1849-90) is virtually indistinguishable from those struck for Wilhelmina (1890-1948) (KM 107.2). This date is common. In 1877, the cent was reduced from 3.84 g to 2.5 g and struck in that weight until 1941.
