This specimen was lot 24348 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. 1/2 Cent, 1886. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: broadaxe. William III. NGC MS-64 Brown. A deep bright and highly delightful near-Gem offering unrivaled quality. Rather unsurprisingly, the finest graded of the date in the NGC census." After striking half cents virtually unchanged for 1818-77, in 1878 the weight was reduced from 1.92 g to 1.25 g and the alloy converted from copper to bronze. The issues of William III (KM 102.1 for 1878-1886) and Wilhelmina (KM 102.2 for 1891-1901) are indistinguishable except by date.
Recorded mintage: 800,000, a scarce date.
Specification: 1.25 g, bronze, 14 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 102.1, Sch-725.
