Netherlands 1883 cent

Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71776

This specimen was lot 71776 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Cent, 1883. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: Broadaxe. William III. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. Minimally handled with more red color than brown appearing over the surfaces." This type is listed for 1877-84. This type, struck for William III (1849-90), is virtually indistinguishable from those struck for Wilhelmina (1890-1948) (KM 107.2). This date is common in all grades. In 1877, the cent was reduced from 3.84 g to 2.5 g and struck in that weight until 1941.
