Jean Elsen sale 133, lot 759

This specimen was lot 759 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €32 (about US$42 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), Cu liard, 1593, Maastricht. D/ B. cour. à g. R/ Ecu couronné. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, copper liard of 1593, Maastricht mint. Obverse: crowned bust to left; reverse: crowned arms. Fine to very fine.)"

In the French system, a liard was one-fourth of a sou and weighed about 3 grams; this one is a little heavier so we surmise that it was worth more.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 5,26 g.

Catalog reference: G.H. 232-2; W. 858.
