Brabant 1596 gigot
This specimen was lot 760 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €140 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), Cu gigot (duit), 1596, Maastricht. D/ B. cuir. à g., sans annelets dans le champ. R/ Ecu couronné. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, copper duit of 1596, Maastricht mint. obverse: armored bust to left, without annulets in the field; reverse: crowned arms. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
In the Dutch provincial system of the eighteenth century, a duit was a copper coin worth one-eighth of a stuiver or 1/480 of a ducaton. The gigot was half a liard.
