This specimen was lot 677 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, December 2009), where it sold for $403.50. The catalog description noted, "PORTUGAL. Dom José I, 1750-1777. Copper 5 Reis, 1776. Ornate crowned Arms. Rv. Roman numeral denomination *V* in laurel wreath. Pleasing red-brown. MS-62 BN (ANACS)." Portuguese copper coins of the 1700's turn up occasionally but are generally in poor condition after several centuries of circulation. This type, struck in Lisbon 1752-76, is no exception.
Recorded mintage: 802,250.
Specification: 6.3 g, copper, 30 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 242.2, Gomes-06.07.
