Heritage sale 3030, lot 23563
France 1831T 5 francs rev H3030-23563.jpg

This specimen was lot 23563 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis Philippe I 5 Francs 1831-T, Nantes mint, MS65 NGC. Streaky aged silver and pinkish gray patina sits atop evidently lustrous, minimally marked surfaces. The finest example of the date graded by NGC and quite desirable as a Gem." This type was struck 1830-31 and many of the dates are rare. This date is fairly common. During 1831, this bust of the new king was dumped in favor of a new one by J.-F. Domard, leading to a plethora of varieties. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 1,259,321.

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, .900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Nicolas-Pierre Tiolier, 1784-1853.

Catalog reference: Dav-89; F.315/27, KM 735.12.
