Sincona sale 63, lot 2503

This specimen was lot 2503 in Sincona sale 63 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 23,877 CHF (about US$29,918 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"EDELMETALL-AUKTION | CHINA | Volksrepublik. 1000 Yuan 1988. Jahr des Drachen. 12 Unzen. Feingewicht total: 373.24 Gramm. Sehr selten. Nur 500 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. In Originalschachtel mit Zertifikat. (peoples republic of China, one thousand yuan of 1988, year of the dragon, 12 ounce. Very rare. Only 500 pieces struck, Choice Proof, In original box with certificate.)"

The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. The gold panda is one of the most popular.
