UBS sale 85, lot 432

This specimen was lot 432 in UBS sale 85 (Zurich, September 2010), where it sold for 4,200 CHF (about US$4,791 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND, Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, Herzogtum, Friedrich I. 1675-1691. Taler 1689. Auf die Einweihung von Schloss und Kirche in Friedrichswerth. Stempel von Christian Wermuth. Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Ansicht von Schloss und Dorf Friedrichswerth vor bergiger Landschaft. Schrötlingsf. Patina Rv. Vorzüglich." (Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick I, 1675-91, thaler of 1689, on the opening of the palace and church in Friedrichswerth. Design by Christian Wermuth. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: view of the palace in the hilly countryside. Nice patina, Extremely Fine.)

This rare and beautiful coin was struck in 1689 only. The duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg survived until 1825.
