Jean Elsen sale 121, lot 1521
Nijmegen 1688 daalder rev JElsen 121-1521.jpg

This specimen was lot 1521 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,844 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, NIJMEGEN, Stad, AR daalder van 30 stuiver, 1688, Droit: Staande ridder met opgeheven zwaard en met voor zich het gekroonde stadswapen. Mmt. morenkop. Revers: Stadswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. Zeldzaam. Prachtig. (Netherlands, city of Nijmegen, silver daalder of thirty stuivers of 1688. Obverse: standing knight with sword supports the crowned city arms. Mintmark: moor's head. Reverse: city arms supported by two lions. Scarce, extremely fine.)"

This daalder of thirty stuivers is listed in the SCWC for 1688-89 only. Despite the limited issue, it doesn't receive a high catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 94,895 for 1688-89.

Specification: 15.88 g, .906 fine silver, this specimen 15,05 g.

Catalog reference: Verk., 21, 4; Delm., 1077; Passon, 83; CNM 2.36.20, KM 30.
