This specimen was lot 20603 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 20 Mark, 1911-A. Berlin Mint. PCGS PROOF-67 Deep Cameo Gold Shield. Single finest certified at either PCGS or NGC. A totally amazing pristine example with blinding brilliance. Virtually perfect with hard mirror fields and deep cameo frosted devices. For the perfectionist who wants only the finest." This type was struck 1905-11 at the Berlin mint and is rather scarce in circulated condition. Ernest Louis was the last grand duke of Hesse, abdicating upon the collapse of the German Empire in 1918.
