This specimen was lot 70466 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1729-X. Amiens Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC AU-58. Sharply struck and overall highly attractive. Free of adjustment marks, lightly toned with underlying soft satin luster and an exceptional example of this type." This coin is an demi-écu aux branches d'olivier from the Amiens mint. Many Amiens mint issues are rare but this one is fairly common altho the type is much scarcer than the accompanying écu. Droulers reports 1726-31 and 1740 for this mint. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV of France. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.
