This specimen was lot 30737 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $7,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria Proof Cent 1880, PR64 Red Brown NGC. Well-struck, with reflective fields. This coin possesses a brilliant red obverse and reddish-brown reverse. Very scarce." This type was struck 1863-1900 in substantial numbers but is not easy to find in nice condition. Hong Kong was seized by the British from China in 1842 and held by them until its return in 1997. In Hong Kong, 100 cents = 1 dollar; sterling coinage was never used there.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 7.5 g, bronze, 27.6 mm diameter.
