The first specimen was lot 9625 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $776.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONG KONG. Dollar, 1868. Lightly cleaned, ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The British set up a mint in Hong Kong in 1866 which struck mils through dollars. It does not seem to have been a success as the mint was closed in 1868. In 1872, Hong Kong began receiving coins from the Heaton mint and in 1873 from the Royal mint. The production of dollars resumed in 1895, this time from the Bombay and Calcutta mints in India, using a standing Britannia design with no reference to Hong Kong. All Hong Kong dollars are scarce.

Recorded mintage: 2,108,000 (including 1866 and 1867).

Specification: 26.96-27.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 10.
