SB421-51035r.jpg

This specimen was lot 51035 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONG KONG. Cent, 1879. London Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-62 Brown. 5 pearls on central profile "arch" of the crown. A fairly difficult date, this deep brown specimen offers a delightful woodgrain nature while some muted brilliance remains in the protected areas. Compare to a similar example, a PCGS MS-63 Brown, which realized a total of $5,040 [!] in our May 2020 Hong Kong auction (lot 40050)." This is the scarcest date of a type struck 1879-81, 1899-1901.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus proofs (KM 4.2 and KM 4.3).

Specification: 7.50 g, bronze, 27.6 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-4.3; Mars-C3.
