Steve Album sale 55, lot 993

This specimen was lot 993 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AV 2 hryvni, 2005, The Smallest Golden Coin Series - Scythian Gold Horseman, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, Proof. This type shows a golden plaque depicting a relief sideview figure of a Scythian horseman, which was found in 1830 during archeological excavations of the Kul-Oba burial mound near the city of Kerch." The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the Karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovanetsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven. The gold horseman shown here was found in Crimea in 1830. It was on display in Amsterdam along with other treasures when Russia invaded and occupied Crimea in 2014. A court battle ensued over custody of the objects in the exhibition, won by Ukraine in December 2016.

Specifications: 1.24 g, 0.999 fine gold, 13.92 mm diameter, plain edge.
