Peru 1689-L R real
This specimen was lot 731 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 1 real, 1689 R+V, unique(?), ex-Ugaz. Very bold full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves, thin flan with small part of edge broken off long ago, two dates, assayer V twice on pillars side but clear assayer R to right of cross (first we have seen or heard of), full (C)AROLVS II in legend, deeply toned VF+. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection." The regime in Madrid finally permitted the viceroy in Lima to reopen the mint in 1684. This type was struck 1684-1701 for the degenerate Charles II. Assayer R is listed for 1685-91. Assayer V is also known for this date, which likely explains why both letters appear on this coin.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 2.68 grams.
