Künker Auction 441, lot 4560

This specimen was lot 4560 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-WEIMAR, HERZOGTUM, AB 1741 SACHSEN-WEIMAR-EISENACH, AB 1815 GROSSHERZOGTUM Wilhelm, 1640-1662. 1/2 Reichstaler 1658, Weimar, auf die Einweihung der neuen Schloßkirche. Prachtvolle Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Exemplar aus der Sammlung eines Geschichtsfreundes, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 296, Osnabrück 2017, Nr. 2674. (duchy of Saxe-Weimar, William, 1640-62, half thaler of 1658, Weimanr mint, on the dedication of the new castle church. Outstanding patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920. When Saxe-Middle-Weimar lapsed in 1640, a new Saxe-Weimar was created which lasted until World War One. When Saxe-Eisenach lapsed in 1741, it was added and the new state was called Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. This type was struck 1658 only along with a thaler (Dav-7547]]).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.5 g, silver, this specimen 14,24 g.

Catalog reference: KM 63, Koppe 337.
