SB824-43220r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43220 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. National Convention. Bronze Centime Essai (Pattern), Year 2-A (1793/4). Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Brown. Plain edge. By A. Dupré. A RARE offering when encountered as enticing as the present Gem, this specimen is the finest of four observed in the PCGS census, and displays rich red-brown surfaces with an abundance of dazzling luster and a sharp strike. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Hans Sc[h]ulman on 24 October 1952). Ex: Howard D. Gibbs Collection."

This is from a series of patterns made as the republican regime wrangled over what the new decimal coinage should look like. Eventually, in 1795, the Directory issued one and five centimes and one decime in copper but never adopted this design.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, 17 mm diameter, this specimen 1.37 g.

Catalog reference: Maz-303 (R2); Gad-70; Guilloteau-425.
