Majorca (1416-58) real
The first specimen was lot 1313 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 950 € (about US$1,230 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Alfons IV (1416-1458). Majorca. Ral. Ex Ramon Muntaner collection 04/24/2014, no. 550. Ex Egara collection 04/26/2017, no. 429. Extremely rare. MBC [very fine]." The second specimen was lot 530 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €240 (about US$334 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CATALOGNE ET ARAGON, Alphonse IV (1416-1458), AR real, Majorque. D/ B. cour. de f. dans un polylobe. R/ Croix longue dans un polylobe, cantonnée de quatre taureaux. Griffes. Très Beau. (kingdom of Mallorca, Alfonso II (IV), 1416-58, silver real, Mallorca mint. Obverse: crowned bust facing in a polylobe; reverse: long cross in a polylobe, cantonned with four bulls. Scratches, Very Fine.)"
Alfonso the Magnanimous (1396-1458) was King of Aragon and King of Sicily (as Alfonso V) and the ruler of the Crown of Aragon from 1416 and King of Naples (as Alfonso I) from 1442 until his death. He was involved with struggles to the throne of the Kingdom of Naples with Louis III of Anjou, Joanna II of Naples and their supporters, but ultimately failed and lost Naples in 1424. He recaptured it in 1442 and was crowned king of Naples.
