Zwolle 1644 1/2 daalder KM-35
This specimen was lot 90 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1/2 Leeuwendaalder, ZWOLLE, 1644, Silver Type IIIa. Ridder achter stadswapen naar rechts .MO: ARG: CIVITA. - .ZWOL: A: L: IM. Kz. klimmende leeuw tussen jaartal ❀ DA: PACEM: DOM: IN: DIEB: NOSTR. Jaartal in het veld, achter de leeuw. Al meer dan 20 jaar niet meer bij ons voorgekomen. RRR. Uiterst zeldzaam Aantrekkelijke, lichte patina. Zeer fraai +. (half lion dollar of 1644, city of Zwolle, silver type IIIa. Obverse: standing knight supports the city arms; reverse: lion rampant divides the date. This is the first one we have seen in twenty years, extremely rare, attractive, light patina, very fine or better.)"
This type was struck 1637-44. The reverse legend, "DA. PACEM: DOM[INE] : IN: DIEB : NOSTR ✿", translates as, "May the Lord grant us peace in our times". A later variety exists (KM 45, struck 1641-52) with the date in the reverse legend instead of in the field, as here. This is the more common of the two.
