Zurich (1424) plappart
This specimen was lot 3595 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,322 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Plappart o. J. (1424), Zürich. Zürcher Wappen über Blumenkreuz in einem Vierpass. Rv. Hl. Kaiser Karl mit Krone und Nimbus von vorne. Auf den Knien ein Schwert. Selten. Fast sehr schön. Nach dem Vertrag von 1424 mit Schaffhausen und St. Gallen. Exemplar der Slg. Zuberbühler, Auktion SINCONA 16, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 6287. (Switzerland, canton of Zurich, undated plappart, circa 1424, Zürich mint. Obverse: city arms over a floriate cross in a quadrilobe; reverse: St. Charles with crown and halo and sword. Struck in accordance with the monetary convention with Schaffhausen and St. Gall. Rare, About very fine.)"
The plappart, or blafard in French, was originally a foreign coin but adopted in Switerland at the end of the 14th century. It was superseded by the batzen at the beginning of the 16th century. It was worth fourteen or fifteen pfennig.
