Zurich (1419) plappart
This specimen was lot 3594 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 675 CHF (about US$892 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Plappart o. J. (um 1419), Zürich. 2.03 g. Zürcher Wappen in einem Vierpass, darüber einköpfiger Adler. Rv. Hl. Kaiser Karl mit Krone und Nimbus von vorne. Auf den Knien ein Schwert. Hürlimann 76, HMZ 2-1110a. Selten. Schön-sehr schön. Schrötlingsriss. (Switzerland, canton of Zurich, undated plappart, Zürich mint. Obverse: city arms in a quadrilobe, singe headed eagle above; reverse: St. Charles with crown and halo facing. Rare, Fine-very fine, Flan crack.)"
The plappart, or blafard in French, was originally a foreign coin but adopted in Switerland at the end of the 14th century. It was superseded by the batzen at the beginning of the 16th century. It was worth fourteen or fifteen pfennig.
