Zofingen 1721 1/2 batzen KM-8
The first specimen was lot 4063 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$7,536 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Aargau, Städtische Prägungen. Halbbatzen 1721, Zofingen. Stadtwappen, darüber ein ovaler Schild mit einem nach links schreitenden Bären. Rv. Ankerkreuz mit Lilien in den Winkeln. In der Umschrift die Jahreszahl. Von grösster Seltenheit. Gutes sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Aargau, city issue, half batzen of 1721, Zofingen mint. Obverse: city arms in an oval shield below a bear climbing left; reverse: anchor cross cantonned with four lilies, date in legend. Of the highest rarity, Good Very Fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 5007 in the same sale, where it sold for 3,500 CHF (about US$5,275 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Aargau, Zofingen Städtische Prägungen. Halbbatzen 1721, Zofingen. Von grösster Seltenheit. Schön-sehr schön. (canton of Aargau, city issue, half batzen of 1721, Zofingen mint. Of the highest rarity, Fine-Very Fine.)"
The SCWC reports varieties in the shape of the arms and the position of the date. This example has the obverse legend "MONETA · NOVA · ZOFINGENSIS ·" whereas KM 9 has "MONETA · NOVA · ZOFINGENS ·". It was also struck in 1726. This and other issues were struck to preserve the town's mint right.
